What you may not have clocked yet is that the 2026 calendar has stacked its two biggest outdoor anchors on the same Sunday, and the farm window in Chester is running on a schedule that doesn't wait for you to get organized.
This is a resident's playbook for the eight weekends between Labor Day and Halloween. It assumes you have done all of this before and want to spend less time driving and more time actually eating a warm doughnut.
The thesis: Morris County's fall isn't one calendar. It's three overlapping ones — the Chester farm belt, the Morristown Green, and the Park Commission's quieter programming — and September 27 is the day the first two collide. Where you spend that Sunday tells you which kind of fall you're having.
The three calendars, and why they don't behave the same way
Each cluster has its own tempo, its own crowd, and its own failure mode if you show up on the wrong weekend.
- Chester farm belt. Ripening-driven. You go when the apples say so, not when your Saturday says so.
- Morristown Green. Event-driven. Two anchor dates plus the restaurants around them.
- Park Commission and arboretum programming. Registration-driven. Half of it sells out before the leaves turn.
The mistake most residents make is treating these as interchangeable weekend options. They aren't. The Chester belt collapses into a two-to-three-week peak. Morristown's calendar hinges on two Saturdays and a Sunday. The Park Commission runs continuously but funnels through small class sizes.
Chester is a farm belt, not a farm, and the window is narrower than the drive suggests
Route 24 west of Morristown is doing something no other stretch of Morris County road does in the fall. Within a few miles of Chubb Park, you have Alstede Farms, a 600-acre family-run farm in Chester with pick-your-own strawberries, peas, pumpkins, and apples during the growing season, plus Riamede Farm and Hacklebarney Farm Cider Mill inside the same fifteen-minute radius. Treat it as a belt, not a destination.
Alstede is the anchor. The farm carries over 50 apple varieties, publishes an apple-ripening schedule and an updated list of available produce so pickers can plan visits accordingly, and admission with pre-purchased tickets includes container options, hay rides, a corn maze, and a sunflower trail. The ripening calendar is the piece most residents ignore and then regret. Honeycrisp windows are short. Later varieties run into November but the field mix changes weekly. If you have a specific apple in mind, check before you leave the driveway.
Two Alstede details worth planning around. On Friday and Saturday nights in fall, the Harvest Moon Hayride adds hay wagon rides, a corn maze by flashlight, live entertainment, and campfires, with a cider glass by the firepit and a live band, and the ice cream window carries pumpkin and apple cider flavors including the Harvest Ice Cream Sandwich, which layers ice cream between an apple cider donut with whipped cream on top. That is a different visit from the daytime one, and a better answer than "dinner out" on a mid-October Friday.
Riamede is the counter-programming. Riamede Farm claims to be the oldest pick-your-own farm in the state and carries 50 varieties of apples, including heirloom, ripening until November, with hayrides through September plus an apple slingshot and farm store. If Alstede's parking situation on a Saturday morning is not your kind of fall, Riamede exists for you, three minutes away.
September 27 is the day you have to pick a side
Here is the collision most residents haven't put together yet. Two of the season's largest gatherings are running on the same Sunday, twenty minutes apart, and each is a different kind of afternoon.

The Oktoberfest side: the Chester Lions Club is running its 28th annual Oktoberfest Weekend and Antique Car Show on September 26 and 27, 2026, at Chubb Park on Route 24 West in Chester. Expect bratwurst, chicken schnitzel, sauerkraut, potato pancakes, giant soft pretzels, apple strudel, and beehive cakes, plus a lineup of authentic German craft beers including Hacker-Pschorr, Paulaner, and Weihenstephan under covered event tents.
The Green side: the Morristown Festival on the Green, running since 1994, returns Sunday, September 27, 2026, from 12 to 5 p.m., rain or shine, with non-stop performances at five different entertainment areas, children's amusements, carnival games, a beer tent, and more than 170 exhibitors.
The honest read: these are two different Sundays wearing the same date. Chubb Park is a fall festival with a stein in your hand and a 1966 Mustang in your sightline. The Green is a downtown-does-open-house, with the restaurants and shops you already frequent set up on the lawn. If you have kids under ten, the Green usually wins. If you have a designated driver and an appetite for schnitzel, Chester does. Trying to do both is how you end up doing neither well.
What the Morristown side of the map does that Chester can't
Chester is a day trip. Morristown is a walkable evening. The restaurant lineup around the Green has changed enough in the last twelve months that the "where should we eat after" question deserves a fresh answer.
The headline is at Vail Mansion. The restaurant space inside Vail Mansion, formerly Jockey Hollow Bar & Kitchen, is being reimagined as a new concept from Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto, opening as a second outpost of MM by Morimoto in collaboration with Montclair Hospitality Group. The plan is to reimagine the 15,000-square-foot space on South Street into six uniquely themed areas. Opening dates have not been firmed up publicly, so treat it as a fall-into-winter watch item rather than a September reservation.
What is already open, and useful this fall: Masseria Italian Steakhouse has officially opened at 28 Headquarters Plaza Mall in Morristown, and Parkside Tavern opened on October 16 at 9 Speedwell Ave in Headquarters Plaza. Sushi Lounge held its grand reopening on October 16 at 1 p.m. after an extensive renovation and a refreshed menu. The point is that the HQ Plaza corner of downtown has quietly become the most active dinner block for a Green-adjacent Sunday, and the walk from the lawn to a table is under ten minutes.
The quiet third calendar most residents forget to check
Morris County Park Commission runs a program schedule that competes with the festivals for good weekends and often wins on quality. Frelinghuysen Arboretum in Morristown carries the fall load. A tour of the history and gardens of the Frelinghuysen Arboretum runs Saturday, September 12, 2026, at 10:00 a.m., and the arboretum's history dates back to 1891. That is the same weekend as most fall-festival kickoffs elsewhere in the state, which means the arboretum is unusually quiet that Saturday morning.
Fosterfields Living Historical Farm at 73 Kahdena Road runs its own thread of programming, and Pyramid Mountain Natural Historic Area in Boonton continues its evening walk series into early fall. These are not headline events. They are the answer to "we already did Alstede, and the Green is too much this weekend."
How to sequence eight weekends
A working order, assuming average weather.
- Labor Day weekend and Sept 5–6. Ripening lag. Save Chester for later.
- Sept 12–13. Frelinghuysen tour Saturday morning, before the calendar heats up.
- Sept 19–20. Alstede daytime with kids. Honeycrisp window opens.
- Sept 26–27. Pick your side. Chester or the Green.
- Oct 3–4. Riamede if you skipped apple picking. Cider Mill either day.
- Oct 10–11. Peak leaf window. Harvest Moon Hayride on Friday night.
- Oct 17–18. Pumpkins, not apples. Farm store loops.
- Oct 24–25 and Halloween weekend. Neighborhood-scale. Save the drive.
The value of writing it down is that you stop double-booking yourself in the middle. Fall in Morris County rewards a plan more than it rewards spontaneity, because the good windows are shorter than they feel and the collisions are real.
