The New Montclair Dinner Map: A Summer 2026 Guide for People Who Already Live Here

July 23, 2026

The corner of Bloomfield and Church was a construction zone six months ago. Walk it now and there are three restaurants and a gelato counter that did not exist in January. The pace of new openings across Montclair this year has been unusual even by local standards, and the interesting part is not the count. It is the geography.

If you plot the 2026 debuts on a map, they cluster on four walkable stretches, each developing its own personality. Bloomfield Avenue is becoming a global corridor. Valley Road is turning into a chef-driven Italian pocket. Walnut Street is quietly a pizza block. Church Street has become a place to eat quickly and keep moving. Here is where each new spot fits, who is behind it, and what to try before the summer is over.

The Bloomfield Avenue lineup

Bloomfield Avenue has always been the main artery, and 2026 has doubled down on it. The most ambitious opening on the strip is Campofiore, a locally-sourced, rustic Italian concept owned by Stout NYC Hospitality Group that opened at 664 Bloomfield Avenue. Stout also runs Allegory and the Splendid Rooftop inside the MC Hotel, so the operators know this end of town already. The kitchen is led by Chef Dan Drohan.

A few blocks over, Sardela's interior mimics Santorini to a tee, with a blue-and-white color scheme throughout, from the walls to the seating, and faux bougainvillea draping the walls. It opened in May under owner Xenofon Lampryniadis and runs a Greek seafood and mezze menu with generous hours: Tuesday through Thursday from 12-10PM, Fridays and Saturdays from 12-11PM, and Sundays from 12-10PM.

Around the same block, Ju-Ichi, a Japanese restaurant chain, has now opened at 512 Bloomfield Avenue, with ramen, sushi, and more classic dishes. It is the group's fourth location and the ramen is the reason to go. The broth boils 100+ lbs of pork bones and over 20 other ingredients in an 18-inch pot for around 24 hours.

For late-night sugar, Insomnia Cookies expanded to Montclair on April 11th, 2026, at 332 Bloomfield Avenue, and stays open Sunday through Wednesday from 11AM – 1AM and Thursday through Saturday from 11AM – 3AM. That is genuinely useful if you have teenagers, or if you are one of the neighbors who used to complain there was nowhere to grab something sweet after ten.

Valley Road becomes an Italian block

Upper Montclair's Valley Road has always had a quieter, more residential feel than the Bloomfield strip. The 2026 openings there lean chef-driven and small.

Clementina opened at 627 Valley Road on June 5th, taking over the former Saunders Hardware space in Upper Montclair after the longtime business closed in 2024. The concept is Adriatic-coast Italian from Chef Michele Rocchi, and the building itself carries a story. "The building we're in is a space with more than 140 years of history, the kind of history you don't recreate, you respect," Rocchi told The Montclair Girl. Reservations are useful. The restaurant operates Wednesday and Thursday from 5–10PM, Friday and Saturday from 5–11PM, and Sunday from 4–10PM.

A short walk south, Jackie's Grillette has expanded into the larger space next door at 612 Valley Road in Upper Montclair, and the family-owned Mediterranean eatery has shortened its name to "Jackie's," while continuing to serve the wraps, sandwiches, breakfast favorites, and fresh juices it's known for. Same food, more seats.

Walnut Street is a pizza block now

If you had told a Montclair resident in 2020 that Walnut Street would have three pizzerias, they would have laughed. It does.

Brick + Dough, located on 110 Walnut Street in Montclair, officially launched its Slice Window on April 8th, 2026, letting customers grab thin, crispy slices of its daily specials + staples without ordering a whole pie. The window operates during regular business hours, and prompts customers to "ring the bell for assistance."

Then 3rd Joint, a slice shop and bakery, opened at 98 Walnut Street in Montclair. Named for owner Beverly Lacsina's third business venture, it becomes the third pizza spot on Walnut Street alongside Brick + Dough and Panzano's. The menu features thin, crisp slices alongside bakery staples and classic Jersey pizza favorites.

Three slice options on one block is the kind of thing that either kills all three or creates a destination. Early foot traffic suggests the latter.

Church Street: quick bites and one big scoop

Church Street has evolved into the neighborhood's grab-and-go stretch.

Toastique, a fast-casual cafe known for gourmet toasts, smoothie bowls, cold-pressed juices, and health-forward bites, opened on Church Street in Montclair on June 20th.

Just up the block, signage went up in April 2026 for Oggi Gelato, an Italian gelateria taking over the former Oasis clothing boutique space at 40 Church Street, which closed in December 2025 after 20 years in business. Founded by Carmelo Chiaramida and brought to the United States by Maurizio and Graziano Ricci of the Romanacci restaurant group, the brand serves traditional artisanal gelato made with high-quality ingredients and no preservatives or artificial additives. Montclair is the brand's first US location, which is a genuinely surprising place to plant a flag.

Off the main streets

Not every 2026 arrival is on a corridor. A few are worth the small detour.

The most anticipated of them is on Orange Road. A much-anticipated new restaurant is getting ready to join Montclair's food scene. Pig & Butter is bringing its "brunch-all-the-time" concept to 401-3 and 401-4 Orange Road in Montclair. The restaurant is led by chef and owner Sherri Grimes, who locals may remember from her time at Anderson's 1949. The restaurant will feature two side-by-side concepts: one focused on brunch, dinner, cocktails and wine from Unionville Vineyards, and the other a coffeehouse and eatery. Pig & Butter will celebrate its opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday, July 31, at 10 a.m.

Inside the train station, Bagel Supreme Go is now open inside Lackawanna Station in Montclair, bringing the family-owned brand's 13th location to New Jersey. The breakfast and lunch spot serves classic and specialty bagels, breakfast sandwiches, wraps, pancakes, waffles, smoothies, coffee, and more, but one of its standout features is a build-your-own cream cheese bar with toppings like Nutella and fresh fruit. It is located next to BDP just outside The Big Room, and is open seven days a week. That is a real commuter upgrade, and it lands right when the World Cup crowds are moving through the station.

And on the horizon, Yellow Rose Bakery + Cafe, a Maplewood bakery, will open a second location in Montclair. The bakery offers a 100% vegan and kosher menu of breakfast sandwiches, baked goods, seasonal drinks and a rotating selection of gluten-free items each day.

One-night events worth planning around

The summer has a few standalone dinners that will not repeat.

On Sunday, July 26, Chef Sam Stymest will reunite with Chef Damon Wise for a six-course Chef's Tasting Dinner in the Stymest family backyard. It is the same place where Sam's Table started as a neighborhood pop-up during the pandemic. Stymest worked alongside Wise at Tom Colicchio's acclaimed Craft in New York City.

For a home cook's evening, The Saint Clair is launching a new Masters Class series, kicking things off with Summer Seafood Secrets on Thursday, July 23, at 6:30 p.m. Chef Leia Gaccione will lead a live cooking demonstration, share chef tips and serve a three-course dinner focused on summer seafood.

Just over the town line

Two openings a short drive from Montclair round out an Essex County summer.

In Livingston, Blu on the Hudson, a renowned Weehawken dining destination, expanded with a new location that opened in early March in Livingston. Named Blu Livingston, the restaurant is led by Blu Hospitality Group founder Michael Giannopoulos, alongside Director of Operations Andrew Christianson. The menu features world-class seafood and premium steaks, with a focus on simple, high-quality ingredients that create complex, flavorful dishes inspired by Mediterranean cuisine and global influences.

And in South Orange, Tira's Cafe, owned by Raquael Hines, opened on April 25, 2026. The cafe focuses on community, featuring a Pay It Forward Wall, a Coffee Club subscription, and a budget-friendly Happy Hour. Its menu includes house-made syrups and drinks inspired by New Jersey, like the Garden State Punch and Ocean Latte.

Why this matters for the neighborhood

The pattern behind the corridor map is worth naming. Several of these openings are led by chefs and hospitality groups with serious NYC or established regional pedigrees: Craft alumni at Sam's Table, Stout NYC Hospitality at Campofiore, the Romanacci group bringing Oggi Gelato to its first US address on Church Street, Anderson's 1949 alum Sherri Grimes on Orange Road. That is a shift in what Montclair operators look like, and it is the kind of thing residents notice one dinner at a time, not in a press release.

Save the map. Try the ramen at 512 Bloomfield. Book Clementina for a Saturday. Walk the Walnut slice trio in one afternoon and pick a favorite.
